Visiting Key West Pt. 2 ....

Let me continue with my tips for enjoying Key West.

You may agree with some of these, not with others, but oh well. It's my blog.

* Scooters. This is one of the banes of Key West. I would rather listen to 1000 chickens than four assholes on scooters playing with the horns. If you come to Key West, get a bike, walk, take taxis if you need to. I've seen more damage done from scooter accidents than anything else. I know I have a few readers out there that will testify. Bikes and booze are fun, albeit a little dangerous. Scooters and booze are bad. And no matter how cool you think you look.... you're on a scooter. Keep that in mind.

* Yes, we have a TGI Fridays, Outback Steakhouse, Starbucks, Denny's, Wendys, McDonalds, Burger King etc etc. Most of them are located in New Town (the part of the island where we also keep our Home Depot, KMart, Sears). You are on vacation. We have wonderful restaurants here. If you want to eat that stuff. Do yourself a favor and stay home.

* Let's go with some of my reccomendations of things not to miss:

* Nine One Five: Hands down my favorite place to eat on the island. YOU WILL NOT LEAVE HERE WITH LEFTOVERS. Let me stress that. It is like a museum for your mouth. The tapas style menu is out of this world. Pay close attention to whatever specials might be coming out of the kitchen. I haven't had anything there that wasn't wonderful. The Tuna Dome is a unique highlight. I can't get enough of their pork chops, and the steak cuts like butter. Don't miss it.

* Seven Fish: The fish is great, the service is great. Yellow Tail Snapper with a Sweet Coconut Curry. It's a tiny little place. Make reservations, I suggest on the early side for dinner there.

* The Green Parrot Bar: No Food, This is just a bar. Well, to say that it is "just a bar" is an insult to one of the most notable establishments in Key West. After the north end of Duval Street steals all of your cash, come drink at the Parrot with the rest of us. It's not fancy, it's just awesome. The live music is the best on the island, hands down.

* Fort Zachary Taylor Beach: Ft. Zach is the place to actually get in the water. Key West does not have miles of pristine white beaches. As a matter of fact we don't have many beaches at all. The coral reef stops most of our waves so our water is clear and flat. If you want to spend some time at the beach, then Fort Zach is the place to go. It's a state park so it's going to cost you a few bucks, but that also keeps the homeless from pissing on the beach. As for Mrs. Bastadly's 5 Year Old... well, he's going to piss on the beach no matter what.

* Martin's is THE place for a Sunday Brunch. The new location on Duval St should be opening soon, but hit it while it's on Applerouth Lane. The Yellowtail Benedict covered in capers is what breakfast should be.

* Get out on the water. Take a sail. Go Kayaking. Snorkel. Or just kick back and watch a sunset with a glass of wine in your hand. It's just a shame to come to this amazing island and not get out on the water.

But all of that aside, the number one thing you need to do in Key West is relax.

Take a few days this year to NOT have a schedule. A day where you can wake up and just see where the wind takes you. Maybe you'll hit a beach, maybe you'll curl up in a bar at the end of Duval st. and listen to some music. Or maybe, you won't do a damn thing.

I love this place.

Nine One Five, Parrot Bar, Snorkeling. Damn, I miss you guys. Rubbing in the "tuna dome" hurts the most. No, there was no pun or insinuation intended, but try working that expression into a conversation this weekend. Giggidy, giggidy, gig-gi-dy!

Yes… but where is the best place to stay? My wife and I are coming to Key West the first Week of August and are looking for somewhere to stay and since we love your blog so much we would like to stay at your place (but you never mention the name).
Would you please send me an email with the info in it?
